Our residential Hygge expert, Sharon Larsen, explains how
you can make your home a gentle and soothing place to be by bringing in the
Danish feeling of Hygge and make your house more attractive to buyers too.
How to use Hygge to sell your home
Sharon says:
“Hygge (pronounced Hue-gar) is the Danish word for the feel
good factor of a welcoming home.
“Hygge is the feeling of cosiness and means creating a nice,
warm atmosphere while enjoying all the good things in life with good people
around you. That’s the image of your home in the cold winter darkness that you
want to create.”
Make your home stand out with Hygge
“Bringing a sense of Hygge will make your house stand out,
so turn on all the lights, make sure all the bulbs are working and the
lampshades and fittings are clean.
“It might be a good idea to change those low wattage bulbs
for higher wattage ones in the winter to create a brighter look. Don’t forget
to turn on any lamps in the room too as they will add to the cosy feel. Make
the most of the little natural light we get during winter, so clean the windows
and pull back the curtains.”
Give winter a Hygge
Sharon continues:
“If there is any snow and ice then keep it at bay because if
your buyer has trouble getting to the house, then they might not take that
important step through the door. Shovel away any snow and salt the ice to make
the walk to your front door as easy and safe as possible.
“Once your buyer is through the front door, your home should
be warm and welcoming. With rising heating bills, you might be tempted to try
and economise by turning everything down but giving a warm welcome to your home
really does need the fire, lights and heating on.
“To give the best possible experience for the potential
viewer make sure your house has been de-cluttered, de-personalised, repaired
and cleaned throughout. If you are having viewers over the Christmas period,
make sure the Christmas decorations are not obscuring their view of the rooms
too much.”
Embrace Hygge and sell your home
Sharon finishes:
“The final touch is to create some Hygge atmosphere with low
music, soft classical music should have the most appeal, and why not light some
scented candles with simple scents, such as orange, lemon or cinnamon.
“By Hygge-ing up your home, you’ll create a wonderful, warm
welcome for your viewers and make your home more attractive to purchasers, with
the added bonus of being able to enjoy the de-stressing benefits of Hygge
yourself!”
