Dexter, the trainee Guide Dog for the Blind being sponsored by Alasdair Morrison & Partners is growing fast and learning new skills for his future as a Guide Dog.
He's now working hard with his trainer Sam who says he's a lovely, happy dog who settled in with her quickly.
He's been attending Training School where he gets to play with his brother Victor. His day starts at 8.30am, when he gets cuddles (awww!) and some playtime, then the training starts in earnest. He's currently working on loose-lead walking in different environments. He is still young and gets easily distracted by birds and other dogs but this is normal and he's making great progress.
He's also working on coming out of his pen on the 'release' cue, and is practicing this skill when entering and leaving Sam's van. Dexter seems to be taking everything in his stride!
Finally, Dexter is also learning chin rest, which will be used for health checks on his ears and eyes, and to make administering medication easier in the future too. He's learned to rest his head for a few seconds already and Sam will be training him to extend this time over the next few weeks.
I'm sure you'll agree that Dexter is making amazing progress and we are all so proud of him. His next Pupdate will be in June, so watch out for more news about him then!
