Tips for Tenants – STOP drying your clothes on radiators

We all know that radiators are a great way to dry your clothes quickly but along with your dry clothes comes the potential for problems in your rented home.

Radiators are designed to radiate heat not to dry clothes. When drying clothes on radiators a large amount of moisture is released into the air. However, the moisture from your clothes doesn’t just vanish, it goes into the air circulating around your home and without good ventilation it can cause mould.

Modern homes tend to have excellent  double glazing and insulation, which means there is nowhere for the damp air to escape. This then raises the humidity of the air in the home and when that moist air meets cold surfaces such as windows and walls it can condense into water droplets. This condensation then creates the perfect conditions for mould to thrive.

Instead of using radiators, take advantage of any warm, breezy or hot summer days to dry your clothes outside. Use a clothes rack if you don’t have a clothesline or garden. If you have no outside space then place your clothes rack close to your windows and open them wide. You can also use a fan to circulate the air and speed up drying or place a dehumidifier in the room to reduce the humidity.

This summer, why not start a new habit and stop using radiators to dry your clothes?
