With autumn just around the corner it will soon be time to huddle indoors and think about all things ‘hygge’ in the countdown to Halloween and then Christmas, says Sharon Larsen.
But these last few days of summer are the perfect time to plan your autumn cleaning checklist.
- Clean out that fridge and freezer, all those summer salads are on their way out and warm comforting stews are coming in. Now is the perfect time to start fresh and get ready to stock up on your seasonal treats.
- All that tossing and turning in the heat takes its toll, so freshen up and clean all your duvets, pillows and comforters, and while we have the bed cleared let’s give that mattress a turn to air it.
- Your plants need some TLC as well, so give them a spa day and gently wipe the leaves with damp cloth. This is perfect for plants with big leaves but those with lots of small leaves will prefer a different approach, such as being placed in a sink or bath and sprayed gently with water. For moisture sensitive plants, you can give them a gentle dusting with a soft paintbrush or microfibre cloth.
- Maximise the light in your home by cleaning all your light fixtures. On fabric lampshades, I recommend a lint roller to collect the dust rather than spreading it around.
- Declutter your clothes; summer clothes you didn’t wear can be donated to make way for your winter clothes, giving soon to be worn jumpers and coats more space to breathe in your wardrobe.
A little cleaning goes a long way in making both you and your environment feel great. Now snuggle up with a hot chocolate and your favourite pastime, knowing you’re ready to greet the coming colder days and nights.
